For our latest piece of work, we explored the rapid rise of outdoor hospitality and the accelerating development of the glamping and wellness‑retreat markets. What was once a marginal alternative to traditional accommodation has now become a structured, investable and increasingly premium segment of the travel economy. Recent market estimates place the global glamping market in the low‑to‑mid billions of US dollars for 2024, with most industry reports converging around USD 2.3 to 3.8 billion and projecting sustained expansion over the coming decade. Growth is far from anecdotal: compound annual growth rates typically sit between the high single digits and low double digits, with some forecasts anticipating a doubling of the market by 2030.
The shift is driven by a profound change in traveller behaviour. Millennials and Gen Z are now the dominant customer base, favouring authenticity, sustainability and curated experiences over traditional hotel luxury, yet still expecting high standards of comfort, service and design. This blend of experience‑first expectations and premium sensibilities has pushed the sector from ad‑hoc campsites to professionally operated glamping estates, branded concepts and design‑led outdoor resorts. At the same time, the rise of digital‑detox and wellbeing‑focused travel has transformed short nature breaks into high‑value escapes centred on mental restoration, slow living and reconnection. Immersion in nature, good food, relaxation rituals and structured wellness programming, yoga, guided walks, breathwork, forest bathing, are no longer optional extras but core components of the value proposition.
As the market matures, the evolution of the product is increasingly oriented towards
premium comfort and elevated services. Modular units such as pods, cabins and treehouses remain central to development models, but the competitive edge now lies in the quality of the experience: private hot tubs, spa‑inspired bathrooms, chef‑led dining, curated amenities, and personalised wellbeing itineraries. Sustainability reinforces this premium positioning rather than opposing it; low‑impact construction, local sourcing and nature‑positive operations are becoming commercial assets that strengthen brand identity and guest loyalty. This shift is reshaping unit economics, with higher yields per unit, stronger seasonality management and new ancillary revenue streams linked to wellness, gastronomy and small‑scale events.
Geographically, Europe remains one of the most dynamic regions, supported by accessible natural landscapes, strong domestic demand and regulatory frameworks that favour small‑scale hospitality. North America and parts of Asia Pacific show similar momentum, though with different emphases larger, event‑driven models in the US; boutique, design‑led concepts in Asia. Across all regions, timing matters: early movers who combine thoughtful experience design, premium comfort and credible sustainability credentials are best positioned to capture market share before the segment becomes more standardised.
Glamping is no longer an experimental add‑on to traditional hospitality. It has become a distinct category with its own economics, distribution dynamics and guest expectations. The most successful concepts will be those that treat outdoor hospitality as experience‑driven premium travel, where comfort, wellbeing, gastronomy and nature immersion come together to create meaningful, restorative stays.
As this segment continues to evolve, we support investors, landowners and operators in navigating its opportunities from concept definition and market positioning to operational modelling and experience design ensuring that new projects align with emerging traveller expectations and deliver long‑term value in a fast‑moving market.
